Matthew Perry first gained fame when he was cast in “Friends” at the age of 24. He portrayed Chandler Bing throughout the show’s ten-season run, a character known for his sarcastic yet endearing personality. Chandler eventually found love with the meticulous Monica Geller, played by Courteney Cox.

In a recent interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC News Nightline, Perry expressed his affection for the character and the show. He referred to that period as “the best time of [his] life.”

Behind the scenes, Perry grappled with addiction. He revealed his struggles with alcohol and drug abuse in his memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” published last year. Perry dedicated the book to fellow individuals dealing with addiction, where he recounted his painful journey through substance abuse and related health issues.

He disclosed that he had spent approximately half of his life in treatment, undergone detox around 65 times, and endured 14 surgeries.

Perry shared, “Whenever I bumped into something that I didn’t really want to share, I would think of the people that I would be helping, and it would keep me going,” in an interview with The New York Times last year.

While on the set of “Friends,” Perry concealed his addiction struggles and described his unhealthy relationship with his work. He admitted, “I felt like I was gonna die if the live audience didn’t laugh, and that’s not healthy for sure.” Perry further stated, “But I could sometimes say a line and the audience wouldn’t laugh, and I would sweat and sometimes go into convulsions. If I didn’t get the laugh I was supposed to get, I would freak out. I felt that every single night. This pressure left me in a bad place. I also knew of the six people making that show, only one of them was sick.”

In an interview on Nightline, Perry’s friend and co-star Lisa Kudrow mentioned, “Matthew Perry was always the one trying to keep everyone else happy.”

Matthew Perry received an Emmy nomination for his role in “Friends” and earned two more for his dramatic performance as an associate White House counsel on “The West Wing.”

Apart from his television career, Perry appeared in several films, including “Fools Rush In,” “The Whole Nine Yards,” “17 Again,” and the TV series “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.”
